SMSC
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)
At Mereworth Community Primary School, we are committed to promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) of all pupils. SMSC is central to our school ethos and is embedded throughout our curriculum and daily school life.
Through a carefully planned curriculum, enrichment opportunities and strong community links, we support pupils to develop as reflective, respectful and responsible individuals who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.
SMSC at Mereworth
SMSC development is embedded across all aspects of school life, including:
- Our PSHE curriculum with strong cross-curricular links
- A carefully curated English curriculum built around high-quality core texts
- Our music curriculum and performance opportunities
- Collective worship and assemblies
- OPAL play and Forest School
- Our restorative approach to behaviour
- Strong links with our local church and wider community
Spiritual Development
We provide opportunities for pupils to reflect on their own beliefs and values, and to develop curiosity about the world around them.
This is supported through:
- Daily collective worship and whole school assemblies
- Regular assemblies led by our local church Reverend, strengthening our links with the community
- Reflection opportunities across the curriculum, including RE, PSHE, English and Forest School
- The use of Lyfta in assemblies and class discussions to explore real-life stories from around the world
Through Lyfta, pupils are immersed in powerful human stories which help to develop empathy and understanding. These experiences encourage pupils to reflect on their own lives and beliefs, while making meaningful connections between themselves and others across the world.
Moral Development
We support pupils to develop a strong sense of right and wrong and to take responsibility for their actions.
This is promoted through:
- A clear and consistent Behaviour Policy
- A restorative approach, encouraging pupils to reflect, repair and learn from their actions
- PSHE lessons which explore moral issues and decision-making
- Carefully selected core texts in English, which provide opportunities to explore ethical themes and different perspectives
Pupils develop the ability to make thoughtful choices and understand the impact of their actions on others.
Social Development
We provide a wide range of opportunities for pupils to develop social skills and work collaboratively with others.
This is achieved through:
- Group work and collaborative learning
- An active School Council and pupil voice opportunities
- Inclusive play through our OPAL approach
- Forest School, where pupils develop teamwork, communication and resilience
- Sports workshops and physical education opportunities, which promote teamwork, cooperation and fair play
- Shared experiences through music, performance and wider curriculum opportunities
Through these experiences, pupils learn to build positive relationships, cooperate effectively and contribute to their community.
Cultural Development
We promote an understanding and appreciation of different cultures, traditions and ways of life.
This is developed through:
- A broad and balanced curriculum, including RE, History, Geography, English and PSHE
- A carefully sequenced music curriculum, exposing pupils to a wide range of genres and cultural influences
- The use of Lyfta to explore diverse cultures and perspectives through immersive, real-life stories
- Enrichment opportunities, including visitors, themed days and wider experiences
Through these opportunities, pupils broaden their horizons and develop an appreciation of both diversity and shared human experiences. They are encouraged to make links between these global perspectives and their own lives.
